The Perils of KY 151
How often are tractor-trailers involved in accidents on KY 151?
How dangerous is KY 151? So dangerous that residents of Anderson County have filed a lawsuit demanding that that tractor-trailers be banned from a segment of the two-lane road. A citizens group, Group 151, spearheaded by two residents of the county, is seeking a temporary restraining order prohibiting access by large trucks to Graefenburg Road until a court hearing on whether a temporary injunction should be issued. The suit contends there have been 88 deaths on a 3-mile stretch of KY 151 in the past four years.
A History of Accidents
Compared to other routes in Anderson County, in particular U.S. 127, there were six times more accidents involving large trucks on KY 151 between 2010 and 2015, according to Kentucky State Police data. Many of these accidents occur when the trucks run off the roadway and collide with other vehicles or property. Part of the problem stems from the fact that the section of KY 151 in question is designated as a National Truck Network by the Federal Highway Administration. That designation means that Federal width and weight limits apply to that segment of the road which may not be engineered to provide safe passage for tractor trailers.
In response to residents’ concerns, the Kentucky Transportation Secretary sent a letter to the FHA in March requesting the agency to remove the designation, and Group 151 included that letter in its court filing as further evidence of the perils of KY 151. In its petition, the citizens group claims that residents have been asking the state to ban tractor-trailers from the road since 2004, and that its failure to take action has created “a clear and present danger to the safety of the community in Alton.”
Whether Group 151 will prevail in its effort to have tractor-trailers detoured from KY 151 remains to be seen. It is also unclear if the lawsuit will be a factor in the FHA’s response to the Transportation Secretary’s request. In the meantime, residents of Anderson County have other legal recourse available to them. If you have been injured in an accident involving a tractor-trailer on KY 151, or anywhere else is Kentucky, you should call an experienced personal injury attorney who can help you obtain financial compensation.
