Semi-Truck Accident Statistics
The United States Department of Transportation (DOT) notes that revenue generated by semi-trucks totaled $610 billion in 2008, and these numbers are expected to have doubled by 2015. With this stark increase in revenue, there will be many more semi-trucks on the road.
The DOT estimates that 500,000 semi-truck accidents occur every year in the United States. Approximately 5,000 of those accidents result in a fatality. One out of every eight automobile fatalities involves a semi-truck. In all semi-truck accidents involving fatalities, 98% of fatalities occur to individuals in passenger vehicles. The majority of fatal semi-truck accidents occurred in rural areas rather than large cities and most happened in the day rather than night. Finally, the DOT estimates that accidents caused by intoxicated semi-truck drivers are on the rise in the United States.
