Nursing Home Abuse Statistics
The 2010 Census showed that America’s elderly represent a larger portion of the overall population than at any other time in history. By 2050, the elderly are expected to represent 20% of the American population. Unfortunately, elders are sometimes abused at the hands of their caretakers and suffer in silence. The National Center for Elder Abuse defines abuse as “intentional actions that cause harm or create a serious risk of harm (whether or not harm is intended) to a vulnerable elder by a caregiver or other person who stands in a trust relationship to the elder. This includes failure by a caregiver to satisfy the elder’s basic needs or to protect the elder from harm.”
While exact statistics on the frequency of elder abuse are difficult to compile, it is well known that elder abuse frequently goes unreported and that many people miss signs. Many times, elders who are abused are do not report it for fear of retaliation.
